Our hot water tank went down this morning and we were at a loss. I called Sargent's plumbing and Andrew Sargent took my call. He had Jeffrey Sargent come to our house in a very short matter of time. Jeffrey installed a new hot water tank and you could tell that he really takes pride in his workmanship. Totally satisfied with the quick response and a job well done. Follow up, I had a slight drain problem from the install but Sargent's plumbing responded immediately and took care of it. Great company, with great service.

We’ve used Sargent’s Plumbing twice and both times they were awesome! The first time was last Christmas Eve afternoon. Our half bath toilet was leaking. They were able to schedule us that day. Hayden arrived on time, assessed the situation, fixed it quickly and didn’t leave a mess. Just recently, the same toilet developed another problem. Called Sargent’s. Jeffrey arrived a little early (not a problem), listened to my concerns and made some adjustments hoping to correct the problem. Unfortunately, it didn’t. He told me it might not; that the toilet should be replaced. Doing that in a couple of days. Quoted a reasonable price for this replacement. He and Andrew have been very patient in answering my questions. Highly recommend!

We have had issues with our sewer backing up into the house for a long time. I was worried when I first called because Sargent’s charges by the hour but wait.. They helped unclog the drain so fast it will make your head spin! Super nice, honest, and much more than fair to say the least. Use Sargent’s once and you won’t let anyone else help with your plumbing. Our issue was a little flap that broke off to keep sewage from back flowing into the home. (Ironic isn’t it that this is exactly what this valve caused several times?!). We couldn’t be happier!

24/7 EMERGENCY Garbage Disposal Installation

While installation is usually scheduled, plumbing issues can arise unexpectedly. If a failed DIY attempt causes a major leak, we are ready to help. Sargent’s Plumbing & Drain responds to urgent plumbing needs 24/7. Homeowners in Broken Arrow and surrounding communities appreciate our policy. We never charge extra fees for emergency or weekend calls.

Garbage Disposal Installation in Broken Arrow, OK

Professional garbage disposal installation involves more than attaching a unit under the sink. It is a precise plumbing and electrical task that ensures safety and functionality. Our plumbers carefully mount the disposal unit to the sink drain, creating a watertight seal. We then connect the disposal’s drain outlet to your home’s wastewater pipe, often configuring a P trap to prevent sewer gases from entering. The electrical connection must be handled safely, connecting the unit to a power source, often a dedicated switch. We also connect the dishwasher drain line if one is present, ensuring the knockout plug is removed. This process prevents leaks, electrical hazards, and improper drainage. A properly installed disposal grinds food waste effectively, reducing kitchen odors and pipe clogs. Sargent’s Plumbing & Drain ensures every connection is secure and up to code. Our expertise means your new appliance works perfectly.

Installing a garbage disposal offers significant benefits for any Broken Arrow kitchen. The primary advantage is convenience, as it allows you to quickly dispose of food scraps directly in the sink. This reduces the amount of waste going into your trash, minimizing kitchen odors and pests. A disposal also helps protect your plumbing pipes. By grinding food into fine particles, it prevents large scraps from causing clogs deep in your drainage system. This is much better for your pipes than trying to wash food down the drain whole. Environmentally, it can also be a benefit, as it reduces the volume of food waste in landfills. A properly functioning disposal is a key part of a modern, efficient kitchen. Sargent’s Plumbing & Drain helps you achieve this upgrade easily.

Our installation process at Sargent’s Plumbing & Drain is thorough and efficient. It begins with an assessment of your current sink and plumbing configuration. We ensure you have adequate space and the correct electrical hookups available. If you are replacing an old unit, we will first disconnect the power and plumbing before carefully removing it. For a new installation, we mount the sink flange and assembly, applying plumber’s putty for a perfect seal. Our licensed plumber then lifts and secures the new disposal unit onto the mounting ring. We carefully complete all plumbing connections, including the drain line and the dishwasher inlet. Finally, we establish the electrical connection, whether it is a hardwired setup or a plug in model. We test the unit extensively for leaks and proper operation.

Selecting the right garbage disposal is crucial for long term satisfaction. We can help you navigate the options. The main factor is motor size, measured in horsepower (HP). A 1/3 or 1/2 HP motor is often fine for small households or light use. For larger families or those who cook frequently, a 3/4 or 1 HP motor provides more power and durability. These stronger units can handle tougher food scraps like fibrous vegetables or small bones. Another consideration is the grind technology; some models offer multiple grind stages for a finer slurry. Stainless steel grinding components are also preferable as they resist corrosion and last longer. Finally, consider the noise level, as premium models offer significant sound insulation. We install all major brands, ensuring you get the best fit for your budget and needs.

Homeowners have two main types of disposals to choose from: continuous feed and batch feed. Continuous feed models are the most common type found in Broken Arrow homes. They are activated by a wall switch and run continuously as long as the switch is on. This allows you to feed food scraps in as you work, making them very convenient for busy kitchens. Batch feed models, in contrast, only operate when a special stopper is placed in the drain. This design is often considered safer as the unit cannot run unless the opening is covered. This makes it a popular choice for families with young children or those concerned about items accidentally falling in. The installation process is similar for both, but the electrical activation is different. Our team can install either type perfectly.

While garbage disposal installation might seem like a straightforward DIY project, it carries significant risks. The combination of water and electricity is inherently dangerous for those without proper training. An incorrect electrical connection can lead to shocks or create a fire hazard. Improperly sealed plumbing is another major issue; even a small, slow leak can go unnoticed. This moisture can cause mold growth and rot in your sink cabinet over time. Failing to properly align the unit can cause excessive vibration, noise, and premature wear. You might also void the manufacturer’s warranty by performing a DIY installation. Trusting a licensed plumber from Sargent’s Plumbing & Drain eliminates these risks. We provide a secure, code compliant installation backed by our own warranties.

At Sargent’s Plumbing & Drain, our commitment is to provide 5 star service on every job. This means we treat your home with respect, work cleanly, and ensure you are completely satisfied. Our locally owned business is built on honesty, so we provide straightforward quotes before work begins. We are fully licensed and insured for your peace of mind. In addition to Garbage Disposal Installation, we offer a full range of plumbing services for homes and businesses. Below is our services list offered by our plumbers:

What Makes a Great Garbage Disposal Installation Service

A great garbage disposal installation service is defined by precision and safety. The service starts with helping the client select the right unit for their sink and usage needs. A professional plumber arrives with all necessary tools and parts. They ensure the work area is protected and work cleanly. The installation must follow all local plumbing and electrical codes in Broken Arrow. This includes creating secure, leak free connections for all pipes. It also means ensuring the electrical wiring is safe and properly grounded. A great service concludes with a thorough test of the unit and a cleanup of the space.

Most Common Garbage Disposal Installation Questions

Getting a new garbage disposal is a great upgrade for your kitchen. Our clients often have questions about the installation process, cost, and types of units. Here are some of the most common questions we answer for homeowners in Broken Arrow.

The cost of garbage disposal installation in Broken Arrow varies based on several factors. The primary factor is whether we are replacing an existing unit or installing one for the first time. A simple replacement is generally less expensive because the plumbing and electrical connections are already in place. A new installation may require running a new electrical circuit and switch, which adds to the labor and material costs. The type and model of the garbage disposal you choose also heavily impact the total price. More powerful motors, stainless steel components, and advanced sound insulation features increase the unit’s cost.

Sargent’s Plumbing & Drain provides free in person estimates for all projects. This allows us to give you a precise and straightforward quote with no hidden fees. We will assess your current sink setup and discuss your needs. We can then recommend specific models that fit your budget and performance requirements. Our pricing is transparent, and we are built on honesty and hard work. Remember that we also offer 10% discounts for veterans, teachers, seniors, and more. This commitment to fair pricing is part of our 5 star service guarantee.

Investing in a professional installation protects your new appliance and your home. While a lower upfront cost from an unlicensed handyman might seem appealing, it can lead to expensive repairs later. Improper installation can cause leaks, water damage, and electrical hazards. Our licensed and insured plumbers ensure the job is done right the first time. This service is backed by our long term warranties on fixtures and labor. This provides you with lasting value and peace of mind.

Yes, you can generally install a garbage disposal with a septic system, but it requires careful consideration. The main concern is that a disposal adds a significant amount of organic solid waste to the septic tank. This waste material can accelerate the buildup of sludge and scum layers within the tank. As a result, your septic tank will likely need to be pumped more frequently. Some septic systems may not be sized to handle this extra load, especially older or smaller tanks. It is important to know the specifications of your system.

We recommend choosing a disposal model specifically designed for use with septic systems. These units often feature advanced grinding capabilities that liquefy food waste more effectively. Some even inject microorganisms to help break down the food waste inside the tank. This can help mitigate the impact on your system’s drain field. When using a disposal with a septic tank, you must be very mindful of what you put down it. Avoid grinding fibrous materials, grease, and non food items.

Before proceeding, it is wise to consult with a professional. Our plumbers at Sargent’s Plumbing & Drain can assess your situation. We can discuss your septic system’s capacity and your household’s needs. We will provide an honest recommendation on whether an installation is advisable. If you do install one, we will stress the importance of regular septic maintenance. Our goal is to provide solutions that work for your specific home setup, ensuring long term function without causing other problems.

The time required for a garbage disposal installation depends on the complexity of the job. For a straightforward replacement of an identical or similar model, the process is quite efficient. Our licensed plumber can typically complete this type of installation in about one to two hours. This involves disconnecting the old unit, cleaning the sink flange area, and mounting and connecting the new one. We work diligently while paying close attention to detail. This ensures all connections are secure and leak free.

If the installation is new, meaning there was no disposal before, it will take longer. This scenario often requires modifying the drain plumbing under the sink. We may need to cut and reconfigure pipes to accommodate the new unit’s discharge. More significantly, it may require new electrical work. This includes installing a dedicated outlet under the sink and a switch above the counter. This part of the job can add several hours, depending on your kitchen’s layout and existing wiring.

When you schedule service with Sargent’s Plumbing & Drain, we provide a clear time estimate. We value your time and stick to our schedule. Our plumbers arrive prepared with all the necessary tools and parts to complete the job efficiently. We complete the installation, test the system thoroughly, and clean up the work area. Our goal is to get your new appliance running perfectly with minimal disruption to your day. We always ensure you are satisfied with the work before we consider the job complete.

Several clear signs indicate it is time to consider a new garbage disposal installation. One of the most common is frequent or persistent jamming. If your unit clogs or hums but fails to spin, even after resetting, the motor may be failing. Strange, loud noises like grinding metal or excessive rattling are another red flag. This often means internal components like the flywheel or bearings are broken or worn out. You should not ignore these sounds as they indicate a serious mechanical failure.

Persistent, foul odors originating from the disposal that cleaning cannot resolve are another symptom. This can mean food waste is trapped in cracks within the unit’s housing, often due to a leak. Leaks are a definitive sign you need a replacement. If you see water dripping from the bottom of the disposal, the internal seals have likely failed. This is not a repairable issue and requires a full unit replacement to prevent water damage. Similarly, rust or corrosion on the unit itself points to its advanced age and deterioration.

A unit that frequently trips the circuit breaker is also a major concern. This signals an electrical problem within the disposal’s motor. It could be overheating or shorting out, which is a potential safety hazard. If your disposal is simply not grinding as effectively as it used to, leaving large food chunks, its blades are dull and the motor is weak. Given that most disposals last 8 to 12 years, age alone can be a reason for replacement. Our team can inspect your unit and confirm if a replacement is the best option.

Understanding what can and cannot go down your garbage disposal is key to its longevity. Generally, most soft, non fibrous food scraps are safe to grind. This includes things like soft fruits, cooked vegetables, and small amounts of leftover plate scrapings. It is always a best practice to run cold water before, during, and for several seconds after using the disposal. The cold water helps solidify any small bits of grease, allowing them to be chopped up and flushed away. Citrus rinds, like lemon or orange peels, are also acceptable and can help freshen the drain.

Conversely, there is a long list of items you should never put down the drain. Hard materials like animal bones, fruit pits, or seafood shells can break the grinder blades. Fibrous and stringy vegetables like celery, corn husks, and artichokes can wrap around the blades and jam the motor. Starchy and expandable foods are also problematic. Items like pasta, rice, and potato peels can swell with water and create a thick, sludge like clog. Coffee grounds are another item to avoid, as they accumulate in pipes and create sediment blockages.

The most important rule is to never put grease, oil, or fat down your disposal. These liquids will coat your blades and congeal further down in your pipes. This creates severe blockages that are difficult to remove. Non food items like paper, plastic, or twist ties should also never be ground. Following these guidelines will keep your disposal running smoothly for years. Our plumbers are happy to provide this education during your installation service.

This is a common and important question. A garbage disposal installation involves both plumbing and electrical work. The unit must be connected to the sink drain and the home’s wastewater pipes. It must also be connected to a dedicated electrical circuit and switch. Because both systems are involved, a licensed plumber is the ideal professional for the job. Certified plumbers are trained to handle the water and drainage connections safely and securely.

Qualified plumbers, like the team at Sargent’s Plumbing & Drain, are also versed in the electrical requirements for these appliances. We can safely handle the wiring for a replacement unit. If a new circuit or outlet is required for a first time installation, our team is equipped to manage that process as well. This ensures the entire installation is seamless and compliant with all local codes. Hiring one qualified professional saves you the hassle of coordinating two different contractors.

Hiring an electrician alone would only solve half the problem, as they are not licensed to alter drainage pipes. Likewise, a handyman may not have the proper licensing for either the plumbing or the electrical components. This could void your warranty or create a safety hazard. By choosing Sargent Plumbing andDrain, you get a licensed and insured expert. We take full responsibility for the entire project, from the pipes to the power, guaranteeing a safe and functional installation.

That flexible rubber piece visible in your sink drain is called a splash guard or baffle. Its primary job is right in its name: to prevent water and food particles from splashing back up into the sink while the disposal is running. It acts as a safety barrier, keeping debris contained within the grinding chamber. This makes the grinding process much cleaner and safer for the user. It also helps to muffle the sound of the disposal, making its operation quieter.

Over time, this rubber baffle can become worn out, stiff, or caked with food residue. A damaged or dirty splash guard can contribute to slow draining in the sink. It can also be a source of persistent foul odors if not cleaned regularly. Many splash guards are removable, allowing you to pull them out and clean them thoroughly with soap and a brush. This is a good maintenance task to perform every few weeks.

If your splash guard is torn, brittle, or permanently deformed, it needs to be replaced. A damaged baffle will not effectively block splashing and may even impede the flow of water. We can easily replace this part during a service call or as part of a new installation. For our installations, we use high quality components, including durable baffles. This ensures your new unit is quiet, clean, and easy to maintain from the very first day.

A humming sound from your garbage disposal usually indicates a jam. The motor is receiving power and trying to turn, but the grinder blades are stuck on a hard object. This is often caused by a fruit pit, bone, or a fibrous vegetable that has wrapped around the blades. The motor hums as it struggles against the obstruction. The unit’s internal overload protector will often trip to prevent the motor from burning out, shutting the unit off.

Your first step should be to turn off the disposal at the wall switch. Never, ever put your hand down the drain to clear a jam. Most disposal units have a hex-key socket on the very bottom of the unit, in the center. You can use a special garbage disposal wrench or a standard Allen wrench inserted into this socket. By turning the wrench back and forth, you can manually dislodge the jam. After you feel the blades move freely, remove the wrench.

Once the jam is manually cleared, you may need to press the red reset button, also located on the bottom of the unit. This reset button pops out when the motor overheats or trips. After pressing it, turn on the cold water and try the wall switch again. If the unit still only hums or if you are uncomfortable performing these steps, call Sargent’s Plumbing & Drain. We can safely clear the jam or determine if the motor itself has failed and requires replacement.
