We’ve also received recommendations for tradesman in other areas of home maintenance, which has helped us resolve issues outside the scope of plumbing.

Our hot water tank went down this morning and we were at a loss. I called Sargent's plumbing and Andrew Sargent took my call. He had Jeffrey Sargent come to our house in a very short matter of time. Jeffrey installed a new hot water tank and you could tell that he really takes pride in his workmanship. Totally satisfied with the quick response and a job well done. Follow up, I had a slight drain problem from the install but Sargent's plumbing responded immediately and took care of it. Great company, with great service.
Sargents plumbing did a great job for us! They returned our service call immediately on a Sunday and came out to our home the following day at the exact time they said they would. The clogged drain was cleared immediately!!! Sargents plumbing staff is very professional and informative. Great service!!
I had the best experience with Sargent’s Plumbing & Drain I’ve ever had with someone in my home, beyond plumbing only. They came when they said they would. Came back to address concerns and make sure everything was right. Took care of our house and cleaned up after themselves. Andrew provided expertise as a plumber and exceptional customer service. Highly recommended!
Rather than charge for a service call, the owner walked me through how to fix my garbage disposal. Wow! Guess who is now in my contacts should I ever need a plumber again.
On time, professional and very fair with prices. Definitely use them again!
Outstanding job, very fast getting the job done replacing my hot water tank and fixing my leak. Highly recommend!

Great job installing new toilet and vanity. Timely and fair pricing. Will definitely use again.
Best plumber I've ever used. His attention to detail is amazing. He cares about the job he is doing, no matter the size. Neat, doesn't leave a mess. Very personal service, nothing like the corporate plumbing companies out there.
They did a great job addressing all of our issues and did it within one hour, which saved us a good amount of money.
Sargent Plumbing got me taken care of with same day service. Jeffrey’s attitude was very pleasant and professional. Will be using them for all my plumbing needs in the future.
They were quick to respond on the weekend and very reasonable on pricing. Highly recommend them!
Very knowledgeable. Arrived within 30 minutes after speaking with them.
Super awesome company! They were fast and super reasonably priced. We had an emergency water pipe bust and they were out same day without charging us an arm and a leg.
Andrew is very professional and fair priced and also makes an effort to connect and care for his customers. I had a pipe bust late one evening and not only did he drop what he was doing to get my home fixed up, he also gave me a more than a reasonable charge (didn’t hit me with a hefty emergency bill). I highly recommend Sargents plumbing for anything you need.
This is the best plumbing company i've ever used and I will be calling them for all of my future plumbing needs. Very professional, fairly priced, and great work. Highly recommend.
Did the job the same day the problem happened. Jeffrey did a great job fixing the problem. If you're looking for a reliable service, I highly recommend them.
Andrew is the best extremely knowledgeable and very helpful . I highly recommend !
Above and beyond on customer service! Fair quotes! Would recommend to anyone!
Bought a house a few months back that had plumbing issues we didn’t know where there. In a panic I searched the web for reputable companies and Sargent’s Plumbing and Drain came out within 30 mins, gave me a free quote and assured they would have it brand new. I can wholeheartedly endorse this amazing company led by a very respectable and knowledgeable young man. If you have ANY plumbing concerns, Sargents should be your first and only call!
We’ve used Sargent’s Plumbing twice and both times they were awesome! The first time was last Christmas Eve afternoon. Our half bath toilet was leaking. They were able to schedule us that day. Hayden arrived on time, assessed the situation, fixed it quickly and didn’t leave a mess. Just recently, the same toilet developed another problem. Called Sargent’s. Jeffrey arrived a little early (not a problem), listened to my concerns and made some adjustments hoping to correct the problem. Unfortunately, it didn’t. He told me it might not; that the toilet should be replaced. Doing that in a couple of days. Quoted a reasonable price for this replacement. He and Andrew have been very patient in answering my questions. Highly recommend!
We have had issues with our sewer backing up into the house for a long time. I was worried when I first called because Sargent’s charges by the hour but wait.. They helped unclog the drain so fast it will make your head spin! Super nice, honest, and much more than fair to say the least. Use Sargent’s once and you won’t let anyone else help with your plumbing. Our issue was a little flap that broke off to keep sewage from back flowing into the home. (Ironic isn’t it that this is exactly what this valve caused several times?!). We couldn’t be happier!
Jeffery was a quick and efficient plumber. He fixed the problem and he did a great job. He has a friendly personality and a hard worker. They get the job done right the first time!
I had a sudden pipe leak from old copper pipes on a weekend. I found Sargents and they came out right away and started working on a fix. They lined up a restoration company that was on the job immediately with machines to dehumidify. I ended up having them re pipe my house and they worked on a Sunday until it was finished. I also had them install a new water heater. Everything was done promptly and professionally. I would highly recommend
They were prompt and very informative. I am female and was never spoken down to (asi have experienced with others). Friendly. I highly recommend
Had a wonderful experience with Sargent's Plumbing! Andrew was very professional, extremely knowledgeable and provided excellent communication throughout the whole project! Great pricing and got us back up and running from our gas leak issue very quickly! Will be using them again in the future!

Water Heater Expansion Tank in Broken Arrow, OK
A water heater expansion tank is a small, but critical, safety component. It is a small metal tank that is installed on your water heater’s cold water supply line. Inside this tank is a sealed rubber bladder. On one side of the bladder is air. On the other side is water from your plumbing system. The purpose of this tank is to absorb excess pressure. This phenomenon is called thermal expansion. It is a basic law of physics. When water is heated, it expands. In a closed plumbing system, this expanded water has nowhere to go.
A closed loop plumbing system is now the standard. In the past, this excess pressure would just flow back out. It would push back into the city water main. This is no longer allowed. Most homes now have a check valve or pressure reducing valve at the meter. This valve stops water from flowing backward. This is a good thing, but it creates a closed loop. Now, when your water heater runs, the expanding water is trapped. This pressure can build to dangerous levels. It can be high enough to burst pipes. It can also destroy your water heater.
This is where the expansion tank comes in. As the water heats and expands, the excess water flows into the expansion tank. It pushes against the rubber bladder. The air on the other side of the bladder compresses. The air acts like a shock absorber. It safely absorbs the entire volume of expanded water. When you turn on a faucet, the pressure is released. The bladder pushes the water back out. This simple device protects your entire plumbing system. It is a required part of a safe, modern plumbing system.
Our licensed plumbers will install your expansion tank correctly. The tank must be installed on the cold water inlet pipe. This is the pipe that feeds your water heater. We will install a new T fitting. The tank will be plumbed into this fitting. The tank must be properly supported. A small, 2 gallon tank can be hung directly from the pipe. A larger tank may need its own strap or support. We will also check the air pressure inside the tank. The tank’s pre charge pressure must be set. It must match your home’s incoming water pressure.
A failed expansion tank is a common problem. The rubber bladder inside can fail. This causes the tank to become waterlogged. When this happens, the tank is completely full of water. It can no longer absorb any pressure. A waterlogged tank is useless. It is the same as having no tank at all. You may hear a thud or water hammer sound in your pipes. This is a sign your tank has failed. Our plumbers can test your tank. If it has failed, we can install a new one.
We also repair and replace expansion tanks that are leaking. The tank itself can rust and develop a pinhole leak. The threaded connection can also leak. A leaking expansion tank is a sign of failure. It must be replaced immediately. We offer 24/7 emergency service for this. We can arrive quickly. We will shut off the water, drain the tank, and install a new one. This is a fast repair that will restore safety to your system.

What Makes a Great Water Heater Expansion Tank Service
A great water heater expansion tank service is defined by safety and precision. It starts with an honest assessment. The plumber will check your home’s water pressure. They will explain why the tank is a required safety device. The plumber will select the correct size tank for your water heater. They will not install one that is too small. They will pre charge the tank’s air pressure. It must be set to match your home’s water pressure. This is a critical step. They will install it securely on the cold water line. The installation will be clean and leak free.
Most Common Water Heater Expansion Tank Questions
The small tank next to a water heater is a mystery to many homeowners. They are often curious about its purpose and why it is needed. Here are the most common questions we answer about this vital safety device in Broken Arrow.
A water heater expansion tank is a safety device. Its job is to absorb pressure. This pressure is created by a process called thermal expansion. When your water heater heats up a tank of water, that water expands. It increases in volume. In a closed plumbing system, this expanded water has nowhere to go. It is trapped. This can create a dangerous and destructive amount of pressure.
This high pressure can damage your plumbing. It can cause faucets to drip. It can make your toilet’s fill valve run. In a worst case scenario, it can burst a water pipe. It will also destroy your water heater. It puts a huge strain on the tank. It will cause the tank to leak and fail, years before it should.
The expansion tank solves this problem. It is a small tank with a balloon, or bladder, inside. The extra water, created by thermal expansion, flows into this tank. It pushes on the bladder. The air on the other side of the bladder compresses. It acts like a spring or a shock absorber. It safely absorbs all that pressure. This protects your entire home.
Yes, in almost all modern homes, you absolutely need one. If your home has a closed loop plumbing system, an expansion tank is required by all plumbing codes. A closed loop system is one that has a one way valve. This valve is at your water meter or on your main supply line. This device is called a check valve or a pressure reducing valve (PRV).
These valves are a good thing. They protect your home’s water from flowing back into the city main. However, they create a problem. They trap the pressure from thermal expansion. Almost every home in Broken Arrow now has one of these valves. This means almost every home needs an expansion tank.
If you are installing a new water heater, our licensed plumber will tell you it is required. It is not an upsell or an option. It is a mandatory safety device. It is required by code to protect your plumbing system. Without one, your new water heater’s warranty may even be voided by the manufacturer.
The expansion tank is almost always located very close to your water heater. It must be installed on the cold water supply line. This is the pipe that feeds cold water into your water heater. You will see it teed off this pipe. It is usually installed above the water heater. It can be installed vertically, hanging down. It can also be installed horizontally.
It must be installed on the cold side. It cannot be installed on the hot water outlet pipe. The reason for this is safety. The tank must be able to absorb the pressure from the tank. The cold line is the direct connection to the tank’s volume.
Our professional plumbers will install the tank securely. A small, two gallon tank is light enough to be supported by the pipe. A larger, five gallon tank is very heavy when full. It must be installed with its own metal straps. This prevents it from breaking the pipe.
A leaking expansion tank is a sign that the tank has failed. It needs to be replaced immediately. The leak can come from two places. It may be leaking from the threaded connection. This is a simple fix. More often, the tank itself is leaking. The steel shell has rusted. A pinhole leak has formed. This means the internal bladder has ruptured.
If your tank is leaking, you should call us for service. This is an urgent, but not catastrophic, problem. You can place a bucket under the drip. This is a job that needs to be done soon. If the tank has burst and is spraying water, that is an emergency. You should shut off the water to your water heater. Then, call our 24/7 emergency line.
We can replace a leaking expansion tank very quickly. Our plumber will shut off the water. We will drain the pressure. We will unscrew the old, failed tank. We will then install a new one. We will properly charge the air pressure. We will ensure the new connection is sealed and leak free.
The most common sign of a failed expansion tank is a water hammer sound. This is a loud thud or bang in your pipes. You will hear it when you turn a faucet on or off quickly. This sound is a pressure shockwave. Your pipes are banging because there is no shock absorber. The expansion tank is waterlogged.
Another clear sign is a dripping T&P valve. This is the temperature and pressure relief valve on your water heater. It is a safety valve. It is designed to open and release water if the pressure gets too high. If you see this valve dripping, it means your pressure is dangerously high. This is a classic sign that your expansion tank has failed.
You can also test the tank yourself. Tap on the tank with your knuckle. The top half should sound hollow (full of air). The bottom half should sound solid (full of water). If the entire tank sounds solid, it is waterlogged. It has failed. You can also press the air valve on the top. If water squirts out, the bladder has ruptured.
The lifespan of a water heater expansion tank is about 5 to 10 years. The tank is under constant stress. The internal rubber bladder is always flexing and stretching. Over time, the rubber will degrade. It will become brittle and crack. This will cause the bladder to rupture. Once this happens, the tank will fill with water and become waterlogged.
The lifespan depends on your water quality and water pressure. A home with very high water pressure will put more stress on the tank. The tank’s life is often similar to the life of your water heater. This is why we almost always replace the expansion tank when we replace the water heater.
It is a bad idea to install a brand new water heater and connect it to an old expansion tank. The old tank is likely to fail in a year or two. This will put your new water heater at risk. As part of our 5 star service, we always recommend a new expansion tank. This ensures your entire system is new, safe, and under warranty.
A professional installation is critical. Our licensed plumber will first shut off the water to your water heater. We will then drain some water to release the pressure. We will cut into the cold water supply pipe. We will install a new T fitting. This fitting allows us to add a connection for the tank.
Before we install the new tank, we must test your home’s water pressure. We will use a pressure gauge. Let’s say your home’s pressure is 60 PSI. We must then pre charge the new expansion tank. The tank has an air valve, just like a car tire. We will use a pump to set the tank’s internal air pressure. It must be set to 60 PSI. It must match your home’s pressure.
This is the most important step. An improperly charged tank will not work. Once it is charged, we will screw it into the new fitting. We use professional pipe sealant. We will support the tank with straps if needed. We will then turn the water back on and check for leaks.
This project is more complex than it looks. It is not recommended for a DIY project. This job involves cutting into your home’s water supply. This requires knowledge of plumbing and soldering or crimping. A bad connection will cause a major leak. The most critical step is setting the air pre charge. Most homeowners do not own a water pressure gauge. They do not know how to set the charge.
An improperly charged tank is useless. It will not protect your plumbing. An improperly supported tank can break your pipes. This is a safety device. Its installation should be left to a licensed and insured plumber.
Sargent’s Plumbing & Drain can do this job quickly and affordably. We have the tools and the expertise. We will ensure the tank is the right size. We will ensure it is charged perfectly. We will back our work with a long term warranty. This gives you peace of mind.
